COMAP Contest in Modeling - 2008

On February 14 through February 18, 2008, two teams of Longwood University students competed in the Consortium for Mathematics and It's Applications (COMAP) annual contest in mathematical and interdisciplinary modeling (the MCM/ICM)!  This was the third time LU has competed in this international contest (click here for pictures and results from previous contests).  The two teams for 2008 were:

Team Beta: Problem B (MCM)

Final Designation:  Honorable Mention

Team Zeta:  Problem A (MCM)

Final Designation: Successful Participant

Andrew R. Grzankowski, Senior Mathematics and Physics Double Major

Zack Johnson, Senior Mathematics Major, Computer Science Minor

Michael Souza, Junior Computer Science Major, Mathematics Minor

Louis Franzel, Junior Mathematics and Physics Double Major

Tyler C. Newell, Junior Mathematics and Computer Science Double Major

Benjamin C. Ryan, Freshman Physics (Pre-Engineering) Major

The advisor for both teams was Dr. M. Leigh Lunsford.     Special thanks to the following folks:

COMAP Preparation:  The teams started training for COMAP in the Fall semester.  Here our Math Geeks roll a whiteboard across campus  (thanks LU library for loaning the white board!).  BTW: We are proud to call ourselves "geeks"!!

There was plenty of good food!  Tyler's girlfriend, Babe, made goodie baskets for both teams stocked with cookies, cupcakes, popcorn, and chex mix.  Dr. L. brought some homemade pesto with bread from The Bakery.  As usual, faculty in the Math & CS Dept contributed to the "COMAP Feeding Fund" to keep our Math-letes nourished over the weekend.
